Louisville Riverport Authority (LRA) is developing a comprehensive Master Plan to guide the future of the 300-acre public port area.

When LRA opened its public port in 1987, it was designed to serve the economy of its day through river, rail and road connections. Since then, manufacturing has evolved, global and domestic supply chains have changed, freight movements have shifted, and environmental challenges have intensified. Today’s businesses require resilient infrastructure capable of supporting modern commerce, advanced manufacturing, and evolving freight markets.

The Master Plan will identify opportunities to modernize the Riverport’s marine terminal, develop the intermodal site, strengthen rail and roadway connections, improve flood resilience, and prepare sites for the next generation of advanced manufacturing and river-based logistics. In the end, we’ll have a strategic roadmap that will evaluate how the Riverport can modernize its facilities, improve resilience, and strengthen multimodal connectivity.

The Master Plan is funded by a $1-million federal planning grant secured by Congressman Morgan McGarvey through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP) and matched by a $250,000 local investment from Louisville Riverport Authority.
The Master Plan is led by Kentucky-based BFW Engineering.
