Louisville Riverport Authority launches new initiative to strengthen global competitiveness of Kentucky companies
LOUISVILLE, Ky., (October 16, 2026) – Louisville Riverport Authority (LRA) today launched an initiative aimed at strengthening the competitiveness of companies participating in Foreign-Trade Zone No. 29 (FTZ 29). As administrator of FTZ 29, LRA will offer a new operator membership benefit program designed to help companies better navigate an increasingly complex global marketplace.
“Foreign-Trade Zones are designed to help American companies compete globally, and that requires more than simply providing access to the program itself,” said Steve Miller, LRA executive director. “As international trade regulations, supply chains, and business conditions continue to evolve, companies need access to high-quality resources and industry expertise. This investment demonstrates our commitment to helping FTZ 29 operators stay informed, strengthen their operations, and remain competitive in the global economy.”
Beginning with the 2027 membership year, eligible FTZ 29 operators will have access to National Association of Foreign-Trade Zones (NAFTZ) membership benefits and professional development opportunities. While the benefits are delivered through NAFTZ membership, LRA leaders say the broader goal is supporting business growth, operational excellence, and long-term success among FTZ 29 operators.
“The companies operating within FTZ 29 are responsible for moving goods, managing international supply chains, and creating economic value throughout our region,” said Miguel Zamora, LRA executive vice president and FTZ 29 administrator. “By expanding access to industry education and professional resources, we’re helping operators stay current on regulatory developments, learn from peers across the country, and bring valuable knowledge back to their organizations. Ultimately, stronger operators contribute to a stronger Foreign-Trade Zone and a stronger regional economy.”
FTZ 29 serves companies across a wide range of industries, providing access to federal Foreign-Trade Zone benefits that support international trade, manufacturing, distribution, and logistics activities.
“The collaboration between NAFTZ and the Louisville Riverport Authority has been exceptional,” said Jeffrey J. Tafel, CAE, President of the National Association of Foreign-Trade Zones. “They were focused from the beginning on meaningful engagement and education for FTZ 29 operators and, in doing so, helped strengthen the FTZ program nationally. We look forward to seeing FTZ 29 participants deepen their engagement and get even more value from the U.S. FTZ program.”
Eligible FTZ 29 operators that are not currently NAFTZ members may receive an individual NAFTZ membership funded by LRA. Existing NAFTZ members may elect to add an additional company representative to their membership or receive reimbursement toward attendance at an eligible NAFTZ conference or educational event.
LRA will coordinate annual enrollment and membership renewals directly with NAFTZ. Participation will be subject to program eligibility requirements and administrative guidelines established by LRA.
LRA will evaluate program participation and operator feedback on an ongoing basis to assess the initiative’s value and identify opportunities for future enhancements.
Funding for the NAFTZ Membership Benefit Program will be subject to annual approval by the Louisville Riverport Authority Board of Directors and the availability of funds.
Enrollment for the 2027 membership year is expected to open in late October.
